Shanghai World Championships - Underrated All Stars

World Championship predictions are coming in thick and fast from around the swimming community. The various predictions differ on certain events and agree on others. What is becoming clear is that a lot of top swimmers are coming into this event under the radar. As a result, I decided to go through each event with David 'The Swim Geek' Rieder to come up with our own Underrated All Star rosters.

  1. great call with pvk on 400m free. He's been 343 in lzr and it shouldnt be a shock to see to return to that territory. However I think part of the reason we dont see many of these names is between we're only picking top 3. Many of these are solid finalists.ie. james goddard over the 'big 3' in the 200back?

  6. I've wondered from the various pick lists that I've seen if that Alicia Coutts is underrated and that Chloe Sutton is overrated but we'll see..

  7. Does anyone else get the feeling that all of David Rieder's "underrated" picks aren't really underrated at all?

  8. I think we need a tallest list.

  9. James Roberts .48.7 . Started training at 15 -broke 50 textile at 18.

    Gotta be some potential there.

  10. I have a question about Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace.
I am trying to find her name in the 50/100 ranking lists. She's listed at #51 with 25.56 this year but nowhere listed in top 100 in 100 free.

Being a non american, maybe I am very ignorant of her? I guess she swims NCAA?

What make you guys so confident of her?

  11. NCAA 50yards champ.

YARDS I tell you. They still exist somewhere on this earth.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oh OK. Well I guess if she can successfully translate her yards accomplishments to LCM, she could be a potential medallist in Shanghai.
    Just like Cielo.
But Cielo was already ranked world's #3 in 100 free in 2006, whereas Vanderpool-Wallace is ranked #51 in 50 free and #116 in 100 free this year.
Even if she finals, it will be a huge surprise.

  13. She's a bit more than just the NCAA 50yds champ.

This year she broke Natalie Coughlin's NCAA & US Open record in the 100yds Free and just missed Lara Jackson's US Open record in the 50 Free.

She also won bronze in Dubai last year at World SC, behind Kromowidjojo and Schreuder but ahead of Jessica Hardy.

And, oh yeah, she trains at Auburn with Brett Hawke and some of the world's best sprinters.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Still there are a number of girls ahead of her on the pecking order:
kromowidjojo alshammar steffen velduis halsall herasemenia brandt hardy kukla.
Its fair to say that she hasnt been talked about for medal contention, but she'll have to do a lot to pass most of these women for even a spot in the finals. It might take a 24.7 or so just to get there.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Absolutely. I didn't pick Vanderpool-Wallace to medal, but as she hasn't been even close to being mentioned in any predictions so far, I say that makes her underrated. Robo-Kromo, Alshammar, Steffen, Veldhuis and Halsall have all been in various top 3's. Kukla and Brandt were both strong considerations of mine for the underrated tag, but Vanderpool-Wallace is the swimmer I would have more faith in stepping up to make a surprise podium finish.

PS. I'm also a non-american, but when you take down a short course record set by arguably the greatest ever exponent of underwaters on the women's side, it's worth taking notice of.

  19. BTw Aswim -you asked ? Aust swimmers at the LA Invitational.

It was a o'seas trip & meet to give Olympic hopefuls a chance to compete in July. They did a similar one to Canada in 2010 & several of that team got onto the Worlds team.

NSW have a separate team as a little prezzie for some god performers.

Note the 14 year old Remy Fairweather -super talent & in a rare long distance squad. One of the club coaches is a 8.24 800 mtr swimmer herself!

Hope they get a Disneyland viiit!
