Hanser Garcia - Cuba's 100m Freestyle Medal Hope

Garcia before the start of the 100m Free final in lane 8.
Hanser Garcia won the 100m Freestyle in Canet tonight in a handy time of 48.89. After turning fifth at 50m (23.76) he raced past Brent Hayden, Yannick Agnel, Fabien Gilot and Marcelo Chierighini on his way to victory.  It was the Cuban's second best showing since his 48.34 from Pan Pacs last year.

From first impressions he still seems pretty raw. His technique isn't as clean on top of the water as a lot of the other guys he is racing, but it is effective. He also seems to have that valuable commodity in the 100m Free these days - a strong second 50m.

Garcia is the type of swimmer that you might forget about in favour of some of the more established names, but that killer second 50m could bring him into medal contention. He seems to be one of the few swimmers where the cliche 'make the final and anything can happen' is fitting.

  1. Was lane 1 first @ 50m, and the slowest "home"?

Remember our trainingcamp in Canet :-)

  2. Actually, he was 48.39 in a meet back in April, splitting 23.48-24.91.

I think swimswam was the only major blog that I saw it on... but assuming that wasn't a full taper, Garcia really is THE darkhorse candidate for a medal at the Olympics.

We saw at PanAms that he finished the race with the same deficit to Cielo as he did off the start. Once you get there, you have to consider that he turn is also much worse than Cielo. From there, you can deduce that he is a 47mid swimmer waiting to happen if he brushes up his underwaters.

Of course, we don't know how much of that potential will [ever] come to fruition, but he is a very exciting prospect.

    1. Hi John. Thanks for the link.

He swam 48.85 in a solo time trial and 48.95 in the actual race at the Copa Marcelo Salado. He didn't get down to the 48.39 that swimswam reported.

      Here's a video of the 48.85 time trial - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEhXz1_rw-w

  3. He has the advantage of not having to swim a tight trials eg USA France Aust . He has the disadvantage of not having that experience.

He definitely looks good but mid 47s are still only 2 so far in the history of humans.

    1. whoa... will you be able to witness the men 100 free WR being broken, or will it have been broken in the final of 4x100 free?

  5. Or both! Also I might get to see a rematch between Muffat/Pellegrini/Franklin in the 4x200 lead-off...
